Paignton is home. We are based here, which means we are usually only a few minutes away, and a good share of our regular maintenance rounds are Paignton gardens.
Clearing a garden that has got away
The job we get asked for most in Paignton is clearance. Gardens go over quickly here, often after a house sale, an illness or a few seasons where nobody could get on top of it, and by the time someone rings it looks like a bigger job than it is.
On this Paignton clearance the garden had gone to brambles and self-seeded laurel, with the beds and paths completely lost underneath. We took it back in stages, kept and reshaped the laurel that was worth keeping, and got the structure of the garden back before touching anything decorative.
That is usually the right order. Clear, find out what is actually in there, then decide what stays. Plenty of overgrown gardens have decent shrubs and a sound structure hiding under ten years of bramble, and it is a shame to skip them.
Taking the waste away
Clearance produces a startling amount of green waste, and it is the part that catches people out. We are an upper tier registered waste carrier (Environment Agency CBDU637846) and we have our own trailer, so we can legally take away far more in one go than a lower tier gardener, and there is no skip sitting on your drive for a fortnight.
It gets composted by hand and goes back into local gardens rather than to landfill. We also rehome plants that clients no longer want through our Facebook page, and we will plant them for whoever takes them.
The rest of what we do here
Regular maintenance rounds (weekly, fortnightly or monthly), hedge and shrub work, fencing, decking, ponds and water features, planting, and general property and handyman jobs alongside the gardening.
Paignton growing conditions
We are lucky here. Paignton is mild, frost is light and late compared with inland Devon, and a lot of half-hardy planting that struggles up on the moor edge does well in a sheltered town garden. What we do get is wind off the bay on the exposed plots and heavy red clay in places, which is superb soil once it is worked and miserable if you dig it wet.

Regular maintenance in Paignton
A good part of our week is Paignton maintenance rounds: the same gardens on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly visit. Mowing, edges, borders, hedges cut at the right time of year, and the seasonal jobs that keep a garden from slipping backwards.
Being based in town means we are flexible about it. If the weather turns and we have to move a visit, you are not waiting a fortnight for us to be back in the area.
Preston, Goodrington, Blagdon and Collaton
Paignton covers a lot of ground and the gardens vary more than people expect. The closer you are to the seafront at Preston and Goodrington, the more the wind matters and the more you notice salt on an exposed boundary. Head inland towards Blagdon and Collaton St Mary and you are into bigger plots, heavier soil and gardens that back onto fields, which brings its own set of jobs: boundary hedges, drainage, and keeping the countryside from creeping in.
Holiday lets and second homes
Paignton has a lot of both, and they need a different kind of attention: the garden has to look right on changeover day, every time, without you being there to check. We keep several on a scheduled round and send photos after each visit, so you know what the guests are walking into.
