The old deck around this swimming pool had given up. After years of Devon weather the boards had cupped and split, the frame had rotted through in places and whole sections were no longer safe to walk on. We stripped the lot back to bare ground and rebuilt it properly: fresh posts on concrete bases, a new bearer and joist framework set dead level to the pool, then close to 200 square metres of new timber laid in one continuous run so the finished surface reads as a single, deliberate space rather than a patchwork.
From there it became a garden again. A pergola with proper lounge seating at one end, rails and a privacy screen to the open edges, a full-width step down onto the lawn, and mature olive trees in terracotta to soften all that new timber. What was a tired, roped-off hazard is now the part of the garden the family actually lives in through the summer.

We are based in Paignton and work right across Torbay, the South Hams and Teignbridge. It is a small area on a map and a very varied one on the ground, which is most of the job.
On the coast at Brixham, Salcombe and Dartmouth it is the salt wind that decides things. Anything soft gets scorched brown on the seaward side, so planting has to be chosen for it and hedges are cut to take the brunt. Around Torquay the plots are steep and terraced, often with no side access at all, so waste comes out by hand or by barrow and a job that looks small on paper takes a day longer than you would think.
Inland towards Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Bovey Tracey you are on the edge of Dartmoor, where frosts arrive earlier and hang about later, so the same planting goes in weeks behind the coast. And across most of the South Hams it is heavy red clay: wonderful once it is worked, unforgiving if you dig it wet.
