This Paignton garden had been left to its own devices for a while and had reached the point where the owners couldn't enjoy it any more. The lawn was parched and full of weeds, borders had become overrun with brambles and bindweed, and overgrown shrubs were taking over the space. The brief was simple: clear it all back, tidy everything up, and make the garden usable again.

What We Were Dealing With

The garden was a decent size with a raised decking area overlooking the lawn. From the deck, you could barely see the back fence - brambles, buddleia and a mass of overgrown shrubs had swallowed the back boundary entirely. The lawn itself was more dried grass and weeds than actual turf, and the borders along the fence panels were choked with bindweed and self-seeded growth.

There was a nice flowering hibiscus and a large bay or laurel tree in the garden that the client wanted to keep - they just needed shaping and everything else cleared around them.

The Clearance

We worked through the garden methodically, starting with the back boundary where the worst of the overgrowth was. The brambles were cut back hard and roots pulled where possible. The buddleia was removed, self-seeded saplings were taken out, and the bindweed along the fence line was cleared back to give the garden its full footprint again.

The lawn was strimmed down and mowed to a clean finish. It was dry and stressed from the summer heat, but with the weeds removed and a good cut, it immediately looked ten times better. Once autumn rain arrives, it'll green up nicely.

The large bay tree was shaped into a clean, rounded form - it had been growing unchecked and had become a bit shapeless. A good trim brought it back to a neat feature that works well in the corner of the garden. The hibiscus was tidied but left to do its thing - it was in full bloom with gorgeous pink flowers.

The Result

The difference was dramatic. From the decking, the client could suddenly see the full extent of their garden again. The back fence was visible, the lawn was clean and open, and the borders were tidy. The whole space went from feeling cramped and neglected to open and inviting.

This is the kind of job that makes a huge difference in a relatively short time. A garden clearance and tidy-up doesn't have to mean starting from scratch - sometimes it's just about reclaiming what's already there and giving it a good reset.
