How We Handle Green Waste: Sustainable Recycling in Devon

One of the questions we get asked most is: "What happens to all the garden waste?" It's a fair question, especially when we're hauling away trailer loads of brambles, hedge cuttings, turf and green waste from a big clearance job.

The answer is simple: none of it goes to landfill.

Our Partnership with Wildwoods Contractors

All of our green waste is taken to Wildwoods Contractors, a fully licensed green waste recycling facility right here in Devon. We use them regularly — they're our go-to for every clearance, maintenance round and landscaping project.

Wildwoods operate an open windrow composting system, which means the green waste is shredded, turned regularly, and composted over time. The finished compost is then used on their own farm and neighbouring farms to enrich the soil and support crop production.

So the hedge trimmings from your garden in Torquay could end up helping grow crops on a Devon farm. That's a cycle we're proud to be part of.

Why It Matters

Green waste sent to landfill doesn't just sit there harmlessly. When organic matter decomposes in landfill without oxygen, it produces methane — a greenhouse gas significantly more potent than CO2. By composting instead, we avoid those emissions entirely and create something useful in the process.

As a fully licensed waste carrier, we have a legal and ethical responsibility to dispose of waste correctly. But for us, it goes beyond compliance. We genuinely care about doing the right thing with the material we remove from your garden.

What Counts as Green Waste?

Non-green waste (soil, rubble, old fencing, plastics) is separated and taken to appropriate licensed facilities. We never fly-tip and we never mix waste streams.

Part of a Bigger Picture

Responsible waste handling is just one part of our commitment to sustainable practice. We're also progressively switching to electric tools and exploring solar charging solutions for our van. Read more about our approach in our sustainable practices blog post.
